Lake Taupo (New Zealand) By Peter Lee
For folks who breathe the polluted air of modern cosmopolitans, Lake Taupo region of New Zealand is a blessing in heaven.
Everything is fresh here - air, trouts, lakes, people, attitudes.... everything you need for your occasional escape from the
madding crowd - despite its reputation as the second fastest growing town in New Zealand.
Today, as you marvel at the calmness and beauty of Lake Taupo, it is hard for you to imagine how this gift was presented
from heaven to earth. Lake Taupo, in contrast to its calmness, was formed by a disastrous volcanic eruption a few thousand
years ago - so bad that it was recorded in Chinese history that the sun went hazy. Fortunately, New Zealand was not yet
populated and so there was no human casualty. It is now surrounded by three major volcanoes - Mt Ruapehu, Mt Tongariro and Mt
Ngauruhoe. Ruapehu erupted in 1996 like a spectacular fireworks display.
Today, these places are haven of ski lovers. Even if you are not a skiing enthusiast, be sure to take a chairlift 2,000
metres up the Whakapapa ski area for a

sumptuous lunch at the highest restaurant in New Zealand (definitely not the highest
in the world, Santiago and Lhasa are higher than this).
While Lake Taupo is now a world renowned spot for trout fishing, trouts are not farmed or harvested here. They are also
not the native here. The first trout was released into Lake Taupo slightly more than a century ago. However, the climate and
the conditions of the lake is so condusive here that trouts grow in healthier size and with better flesh texture than those
at their origins. The record catch is slightly above 8 kg - can be considered a giant trout. It is certainly an enjoyable
experience to catch a trout here and let the chef in the restaurant prepare fresh trout sashimi with fresh prawn burger from
the world's only geothermal prawn farm nearby on a leisurely day.
Do not miss the Turangi area at the beginning of Taupo region (Taupo is exactly between Wellington and Auckland). There
are many reasons for so:
- One of the most interesting scientific architecture - the picturesque Tokaanu Hot Pools Complex and the adjacent natural
thermal area.
- rich in Maori history which is the tribal home of the Ngati Tuwharetoa people.
- Numerous outdoor recreational pursuits available: rafting, kayaking, skiing, fishing, trekking, boating, golfing, tramping,
climbing, flying, horse riding and scenic drives.
- Each of these outdoor activities is supported by an infrastructure of accommodation, restaurants and transport to your best
convenience and comforts.
- Population of only 4,300 - a far from township figure.
